DIY Wall Repair: How to Patch a Hole Like a Pro, But Why You Should Call One

Repairing a hole in your wall can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a bit of know-how, it's a project that you can tackle on your own. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you fix that hole in your wall like a pro.

Step 1: Gather your materials. You'll need a drywall patch kit, joint compound, a drywall knife (or set of different sizes depending on the repair), a sanding sponge, and paint that matches the color of your wall.

Step 2: Clean the area around the hole. Use a damp cloth to remove any debris or dust from the surrounding wall.

Step 3: Use the appropriate size patch to fit the hole. The patch should be slightly larger than the hole on all sides.

Step 4: Apply the patch using the adhesive on the back and press it firmly into the hole. Use the drywall knife to smooth out any air bubbles and make sure the patch is flush with the wall.

Step 5: Apply a thin layer of joint compound evenly across the patch. You want just enough mud to cover patch so that when it dries you can lightly sand without sanding into the patch. You'll want this thinned out on the outer edges. (Some people just don't have the finesse to do this successfully). Your goal in this step is to to apply it in a way that requires as little sanding as possible.

Step 6: Allow the joint compound to dry the appropriate amount of time. This will vary depending on the product selection. As a beginner you will not want to use a fast setting joint compound (Pro Tip: You can speed up the process with a heat gun or hair dryer, but a heat gun should be used with extreme caution).

Step 7: Sand the area around the patch to make it smooth and even with the rest of the wall, and lightly sand over the patch just enough to smooth it without sanding into the mesh.

Step 8: Paint the patch to match the rest of the wall.

While this guide may help you with minor repairs, it's important to keep in mind that some wall damages or repairs may require a professional touch. Hiring a professional handyman can save you time, money, and headaches in the long run. They have the skills, knowledge, and tools to repair the hole in your wall correctly and efficiently. Attempting a repair on your own, without the proper skills can create a bigger issue and lead to a more costly repair. Professionals will, also, identify any underlying issues that may lead to future damage if not addressed properly. Trust a professional to make sure the job is done right the first time, so you can enjoy life and have a smooth beautiful finish.
